Lafayette, Contra Costa County
Elam Brown bought a Mexican land grant here in 1848 and built a grist mill, and the settlement that followed was named Lafayette in 1857, when the first postmaster proposed honoring the French general. The city incorporated in 1968. Lafayette Reservoir, completed in 1933 and marked by a tall concrete tower, is ringed by a paved trail and sits just above downtown.
